Clark celebrates 40 years rocking New Year's Eve : NEW YORK- Forty years ago, New Year's Dick Clark's special was created to give young people an alternative to seasonal facilities, bandleader Guy Lombardo.
Now Clark's annual show is an institution.
"New Year's Rockin 'Eve", with Clark and Ryan Seacrest, pays tribute to its history during the stretch, nearly six-hour program on Saturday evening. The celebration takes all prime time on ABC, half an hour break for local news, then returns to the air for two and a quarter hours, which includes the ball drop in Times Square in New York to mark the beginning of 2012.
"I'm looking forward to this time, 2:15 (Sunday morning)," said Larry Klein, who has been producing shows since 1977.
Clark special shows no sign of slippage, after collecting his biggest audience in five years last year. 18.8 million people who watched ABC in the last half of 2010 and first half-hour in 2011 were more than the audience of NBC and Fox, in combination, the company Nielsen Ratings said.
Not designed to show a summary of the year in music, but it's almost what it is, Klein said.
A total of 29 separate musical performances are planned.
This year's headliner Lady Gaga, who gets the prime slot on the Times Square in a few minutes before midnight. Justin Bieber, Pitbull, Hot Chelle Rae, Florence + The Machine, Gym Class Heroes, Nicki Minaj and Taio Cruz Among the other featured performers from New York and Los Angeles. Beyonce is scheduled to perform in London, where she was on tour.
This may seem wrong with this lineup, but Klein said reservations call the show, because performers often offers some of its most lucrative gigs on the eve of New Year. That Clark has to offer is the impact of a large audience not often seen this side of "American Idol".
And it is unique. Klein remembers the joy of Jennifer Lopez a few years ago after the Times Square, despite wearing a skimpy outfit and be pelted by freezing rain.
"No matter how I try to explain to people what it's like to be in Times Square to live, I can not do it justice," he said. "You have to experience it once in your life."
During the first two hours, ABC will show clips of speeches from past New Year's Eve events, which Klein describes as a fascinating journey through his hair, clothes and musical styles. Top stars Clark "Rockin 'Eve" included Al Green, Helen Reddy, and Three Dog Night.
The new year also marks the annual appearance of Clark, once a ubiquitous presence on television. Turn makes it difficult for Clark to talk, but he does not want to miss this show, Klein said.
"Dick, Dick Clark is still," he said. "His relationship a bit more complicated, but it is still involved in contemporary music. He listens a lot, he knows a lot, he is still involved in production. It is very important to him. This is one of his children."
Among the other major broadcasters, NBC and Fox will both be in Times Square New Year's Eve, too. CBS hands the night of its schedule for its local affiliates.
